Welcoming in 2014 - themed as a time for decisive action, Vanessa MacDonald shares the benefits and wonders of New Zealand's First Light Flower Essence range

The wisdom of the plants: Flower Essences – what are they?

A few years ago I was looking to continue my training as well as bring something to my practice that would enhance my work and allow the benefits to continue for clients beyond the treatment session.

As a natural therapist I often hear the stories of the people I treat and the issues they are facing in their lives and while I know the body work I give clients helps treat the physical symptoms I wanted to offer something that could help create lasting change emotionally as well. Somehow, instinctively I knew it would come in a bottle and that it would be a take-home remedy that my clients could easily administer themselves.

With it still just a notion and not quite a full-on search (Bach flower essences were the only thing I could think of), one day a woman client asked if I had attended ‘Medicine Woman’ and if I was using First Light Flower Essences. I hadn't heard of either but the client, who I now call my angel of answers, told me of the work of Franchelle Ofsoske-Wyber and New Zealand’s amazing First Light Flower Essence Range. First Light refers to New Zealand being the first country in the world to witness the first light of each new day…Nice!

So that was my first introduction to New Zealand’s flower essences. I promptly went home and Googled them. I was hooked and within a month I flew to Auckland to begin studying New Zealand’s special ancient flora. Since then I have attended five Medicine Woman gatherings in Taupo where the teachings go to a whole other level.

Using these wonderful gifts from the plant kingdom, I continue to work on myself and on clients and I have found them to be powerful catalysts for change.

On a simplistic level, it’s a symbiotic relationship; we cannot live without plants and they cannot live without us but they also give us the wonderful gift of medicine.

If the truth be told without them my road these last few years could have been a whole lot more bumpy; luckily I now have the tools to mitigate those bumps and help keep me in the flow without getting tipped overboard, for that I am very grateful.

Flower essences are infusions of flowers in water that are potentised and then stabilised in a solution of brandy or cider vinegar. They contain the unique healing energies or vibration of the plant.

Flower essences work on the electrical network within and around our bodies to help correct imbalances and to re-align our energy systems.

Flower essences work on an emotional, mental and spiritual level to shift negative feelings, traumas, attitudes and belief patterns that block our path to success.

Flower Essences can help us deal with stress, crisis, fear and anxiety and help us cope with the ups and downs of life. They assist us to maintain our emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Essences are most potent when used orally; 3-4 drops under the tongue 2-3 times a day generally until condition/s cease.

NZ essences are completely natural and have been created the same way as Dr Edward Bach’s over 60 years ago in his Bach flower range; in addition
the New Zealand First Light range are made for 21st century living and all that that entails using native flowers, ferns, plants, seeds and trees.

I continue to be amazed by the continuing stories of wellbeing though the help of our native plants and never do I underestimate their potential for healing on all levels.

Personally I am delighted to have at my disposal something that I can treat myself with when times are tough, emotions are awry, habits get out of hand or life-changing situations come my way. But that’s not all folks, I not only heal the negative in myself, I can enhance all those incredible innate qualities I possess too. Yippee! Like taking initiative, enthusiasm and joy to name a few, now one can never have enough joy, can one. A work in process indeed I AM.

A joyous 2014 to one and all – The Year of the Wooden Horse, time for decisive action.
