One helluva trier!

Trying something new led Vanessa MacDonald to a higher level of wellbeing and understanding when she undertook training in the practice of Reiki Healing

I am a total believer in "don’t knock it until you try it" and believe me I am one helluva trier…ummm triER not trying! Please don’t question my family regarding the latter or you may get another answer altogether.

But I am also a born sceptic so for me these two qualities work well together. If I am not totally convinced by something I am usually (within reason and in accordance with my internal self-preservation mechanisms) willing to try.

In the past some of my trying has involved jumping from aeroplanes and off cliffs, swimming in freezing waters and sleeping in a snow cave in the mountains (Bear Grylls eat your heart out). That’s just the physical stuff but what I have discovered with my wellness is that some of the things I've tried and that have actually worked for me may not (yet) be scientifically proven, but they have worked for me nonetheless. Many ancient cultures have used techniques that today’s science is only just beginning to prove - science I guess has a lot to do with measuring and if there aren’t the tools to measure something then surely it cannot be real or even work.

This brings me to my study of Reiki Healing. When I first heard of Reiki I was in fact a little dubious. In theory it sounded lovely - ‘a healing art which brings harmony to mind, body and spirit through a hands-on healing approach'. But the trier in me was willing to set the scepticism aside and check it out for myself.

One thing that I have learned in life is everyone has there own unique perspective on their own experiences, so to get the low-down about Reiki from someone else’s experience wasn’t going to cut it. So I found myself in the Highlands of Scotland in a big old stone manse ‘stately residence’ with a lovely group of people willing to try something new.

The usual self-doubts arose - would I be able to do it, maybe I don't have the... blah blah blah. So pushing all the mental drama aside, my experience was wonderful, light and unique to me, a deep connection and hot flow of heat pulsing through my hands ensued – wow this must be the Reiki! The giving and receiving of Reiki Healing was both energising and relaxing. It quickly brought my being into a state of equilibrium and that, I believe, is when the magic takes place and the healing starts. From a place of deep relaxation and peace I was renewed and gosh it felt good.

As stated on The International Centre for Reiki Training website:

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

So I AM a trier and now a believer, especially of Reiki Healing. My experiences have proved this to me and I would encourage anyone who feels a pull to try something new, whatever that may be, not to let the mental thoughts override and let other people talk us out of trying. We are all unique as are our experiences and perspectives - what feels good and right for me is good and right for me.
