Trends vs body shape

Just as every body is unique, so to is clothing - as such Trudi tackles the tricky question of 'which trend and style is right for you, our age and shape?'

How many of you look at other people wearing the very latest fashion and a) wonder if you could? b) wish you could? c) rush out and buy a similar item? I would bet that you fall into at least one of these categories.

Rest assured that everyone wants to feel modern, yet age appropriate. Some people get it right, quite a few get it wrong, but good on them for trying I say! The key to dressing with the latest fashion fad is to know your body shape and adapt the fashion to suit your shape and age, rather than vice versa.

How many people want to wear the current trends for printed trousers? Everyone can wear printed trousers but here is the key. Capri-style trousers are for everyone, likewise 7/8s are great for all heights (they look like normal length trousers on those a little shorter) and there is no hemming needed! Leave any ‘legging’ type fits for those in the younger generation OR if you do like patterned leggings, then wear them under a dress.

Beware tops and dresses that are generous around the tummy/waist area. Great you may say, it will 'hide' my wobbly bits. Wrong I'm afraid. If you try and hide these sections of your body, I hate to say it but you end up making them not one, but TWO sizes bigger. If people can not see your shape/waist, they do not assume you are smaller under all that material, they assume you are that size.

Bomber jackets are all the rage, and can look great on many. But mostly they are better suited to people who have a smaller upper body. They essentially create a bulkier, unstructured look. Therefore if you have a larger chest and a tum, then a tailored blazer with classic lapels and a great shape to the waist is going to suit you much better and can go over any pieces that are floaty, sheer or a little bulkier.

If you don't feel confident trying to adapt the current styles for your body there are plenty of other ways of updating your outfit. Currently chunky jewellery and scarves are big. Add these to simple outfits and voila! You have a more modern look. Using the latest colours that suit your complexion is another way to stay modern and 'in season' as is cashing colours and some pattern on pattern action. Whatever you wear and however brave you are with regards to fashion trends, don’t look to anyone else but yourself. Choose what is best for you, rather than what looks great on a celebrity, friend or even the mannequin.

This month is New Zealand Fashion Week. I am really looking forward to seeing all the marvelous creations on the runway. I like to take inspiration from them and adapt them to suit my own style, body and age. I can also look at them and appreciate all the other wonderful variety of body shapes and styles that suit other people, including my new and existing clients. We can all look the very best we can with what we have. Check out my photo on this site and if you do attend any shows come and say hi!
