Go on - put your fancy on

Pulling the old sneakers and jeans off and putting on heels and a posh dress can be a daunting thing, however don't despair for our fashionista Trudi is here

I love dressing up so when I get invited to a black-tie event I get really excited. However it seems I am not the norm. Many people freak out when invited to an event that requires clothing a step up the fancy ladder of clothing etiquette from "casual dressy".

So if this is you, I’m here to say, YOU are the normal one, I am a dress-up freak. In my defence my love of all things glitter does come with the job as a personal stylist. I adore texture and fabrics and am lucky enough to be exposed to lots of fabulous fashion during the course of my day.

For those of you thinking fashion for me is all about designers and the latest cutting-edge fashion - not so. Whilst I do have some pretty amazing designer pieces many of them have come via my absolute love of op-shopping.

How many of you have bought a lovely outfit for a particular occasion and have only worn it once or maybe twice at most? What’s happened to that outfit or dress? Maybe you didn’t feel great in it, maybe it doesn’t fit any more, maybe you just have others that you prefer.

Often times these items, some covered in sequins, others beautifully cut pieces of fabric, make their way to a pre-loved shop where they are hung ready and waiting for someone to fall in love them with and feel a million bucks.

I also understand that pre-loved fashion is not for everyone. That is why I always say ‘buy the dress when you find the dress’. Many a time I’ve talked to clients who regret not buying that ideal evening outfit because they didn’t have a function to go to at that precise time. Always remember that if the dress is a great colour and suits your body shape it will always look fantastic on you.

So take my advice and buy it when you find it. When you do eventually get that invitation to a ball, formal party or wedding, you will be able to relax and know you already have something to wear.

So therefore, you can then imagine my excitement when I got the news I’ll be co-MC’ing this years’ Wellington Multiple Sclerosis Society Spring Fling Ball on Saturday, 23rd August. Clearly I had no problem with the black-tie dress code. In fact, I have so many gowns I plan on doing multiple changes – just like the Oscar and BAFTA presenters do!

If you are keen for an evening of dressing up and supporting this wonderful event, why don’t you come along to the ball at the MAC Brewery function rooms. Don’t be nervous that you have ‘nothing to wear’ and remember everyone’s interpretation of ‘black tie’ is different. Does it mean a long dress or short cocktail number?  Answer, BOTH. Plain and simple, it’s your best dress.

Don’t let the dress-up factor stop you coming out for the perfect wave goodbye to winter, hello to spring and support of such an important cause and if you are thinking about popping to the shops to buy a new outfit, maybe a pre-loved party frock could be a great option. It certainly was a couple of years ago at a previous MS Ball when the woman who won the ‘best-dressed’ award announced her dress was from Savemart and cost $18!
