What to wear, what to wear, what to wear! As the colder months creep in, the Autumn fashions start to emerge, challenging even the most fashionista among us

As we know fashion and trends are a subjective form of expressing ourselves through the way we dress and what we choose to wear. But as each season swings around, I usually find there is the good, the bad and the uncertain with every style.

Here are my good, bad and not quite sure for Autumn 2014. Your opinion may differ completely from mine - as I always say, don't lose confidence in your instincts -follow them and they will no doubt see you right.

The Good - the 60s vibe

Colour, A-line skirts and knee-high boots. I mean COME ON! Great combination for so many people.  In particular, A-line skirts skim over the lower body so anyone conscious of their bottom and thighs are in luck. As an added extra these style of skirts also counter balance a larger upper body, giving balance to your bust, chest and shoulders. Many of the models on the runways have the skirts pretty short, as was the trend in the 60s, but my advice is to stay mindful of age-appropriate lengths of skirts. Knee high boots, or boots just below the knee are also a must-have for any wardrobe.

The Bad - Robe Coats

Yes it's getting cold, yes we all need a great coat, but do we really need to wear one that is oversized and looks like a dressing gown? I think not. Personally I like simplistic tailoring on my more bulky woollen items. Where this can work is when the coat fits well and has some shape to begin with. But as this trend shows by the photos above, it's all about oversized and bulky with the front tie. Let's hope what has come straight from the runway gets adjusted for mainstream wear, as is often what happens.

The Uncertain - Dresses over pants

Haven't we done this trend before during the 90s? I wasn't a fan then, but I'm not closing the door on this one. I love the practicality of it and I also like the textural and longer silhouette layering that can be achieved. This time round the trousers are nice and slim so this makes it way better than the flared skirt over a flared trouser. Will it work for the shorter person? Unlikely. Unless you understand the concept on where each layer needs to end to keep you proportionate.

There are usually at least a dozen trends each new season. Many of them will suit your colouring, shape, age and taste. Enjoy, be selective and remember to keep colourful over Autumn/Winter 14.
