The importance of accessories

This month Trudi gives us a lesson in making the best out of accessories - working together with your outfit to create an ensemble that expresses your style

Are you one of those people who look at others wearing colourful, chunky accessories and scarves and think how nice they look while in your head you’re actually saying “but I could never wear that”. Well I'm here to tell you that you can!

Personally I believe accessories add the perfect finishing touch to an outfit. There are many reasons why, which I’ll outline today in the hope it will give you some courage to accessorise yourself.

First, if you suit a lower neckline - just above the cleavage - you may feel self-conscious that you have a little too much upper body skin on show. However, a nice medium-sized pendant placed centre stage solves this problem and looks fantastic.

Accessories, whether a necklace, scarf, bracelets, rings, earrings or brooches are an easy inexpensive way of staying modern and lifting an outfit that may be a little underwhelming.

Say the dress you are wearing is in a neutral colour, or the cut of your outfit is very simple and classic, a string of coloured beads or some pretty earrings will give your outfit that little extra oomph and generally when you add some zing the compliments tend to come rolling in, resulting in a great outcome all round.

If bigger necklaces scare you, how about a lovely, interesting, textured brooch on your winter coat? So many people own plain black coats - I shall talk coats later in winter - but many a velvet flower or interesting brooch has produced a smile and a compliment to this winter staple.

Over the last few years, scarves, worn as everyday accessories, have become very popular and fashionable. However, there are right and wrong ways to wear the humble scarf with many online tutorials to give your guidance. Check out my own favourite three ways in this video:

The great thing about accessories and jewellery these days is that you can pick up some fantastic pieces for great prices, so this autumn I challenge you to accessorise and see how you go. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised how it makes your outfit feel modern and 'finished'. Promise me you will make this a coloured accessory and I'll be very happy indeed.
