Trudi Bennett  reminds us that New Years resolutions aren't all about hard work and suggests a more gentle,  relaxed approach to getting the best out of 2014

It's a new year the perfect excuse for a fresh start, be it your attitude, your body image or your wardrobe. As a rule, new years resolutions are usually based on food/drink/bad habits. But how often do we stick to these? Not often I fear.

Personally I prefer a much gentler approach and that is to think of one physical goal that is achievable (small amount of exercise?), trying something new (indoor netball, yoga) or a professional goal. Aim to do something a little better, faster or easier than last year.

It’s also important to set personal goals such as aiming to be more patient, open to trying new things or getting down to solving a problem you have struggled with. In my job as a personal stylist and shopper I meet many men and women who have struggled with clothes, their shape, their colours as well as feeling frumpy and 'lost' when it comes to their personal appearance.

One of the best parts of my job is seeing the relief on people's faces when they know:
a) lots of people struggle with the same concerns
b) their concerns can be solved and made easier
c) they can come away from a shop with enough clothes that mix and match and go together to last them for the next few seasons and beyond.

I can't promise you that you will magically love shopping. What I can promise is that it will be easier, take you less time and you’ll get up in the morning and have a wardrobe that goes together and you feel really good in - whether it's a great pair of jeans or a structured work outfit.

All those things that bamboozle you such as accessories, which colours go with what, what SHOES do you wear with those skirts are answered. You can attend that function, evening out with a great party dress or smart blazer and jeans. You can look and feel great no matter what size or shape you are.

Look at solving problems that will free you up to put your energy into all those other things you want to achieve in 2014. Make the decision to do something for yourself in 2014.

I wish you a safe, exciting, rewarding and colourful year.
