How others see you

First impressions: people forming an opinion of you based on very little - are so unfair. Don't despair, Trudi's here to ensure yours is the right impression

When you walk into a room how long does it take someone to form an impression of you? If you guessed three seconds - you'd be right. Yes, it's true, in that small amount of time, based on your appearance and body language, the people you meet believe they have an idea of the sort of person you are and what your confidence level is.

Scary to think that in a few seconds such an impression is made. Imagine how important this is in job interviews? Within the next 30 seconds this initial impression can be locked in. In a survey of the members of the American Personnel Consultants, three-quarters of those men and women who are responsible for hiring people for large companies generally agreed that they made their decision to hire or not to hire a person within 30 seconds of the first meeting.

“So,” I hear you say, “I’m not going for a job interview so what does it matter?”. It matters! Whether it's bumping into an acquaintance in the supermarket, picking up the kids from school, having a chat with your boss or meeting new people at a dinner party, the response and interaction you receive from people helps form your confidence levels if not just your day's experience.

Now the kicker is how to go about doing the best you can with what you have.

I could write pages about this as it's my job, but one rule of thumb is always leave the house looking and feeling good. Whether it’s work clothes or a great pair of jeans, make an effort to ensure your clothes fit and suit you and that when YOU look in the mirror you can honestly say, " I don't care who I meet today, because today I look and feel good".

We have all thrown clothes on with no effort and headed out the door knowing it's not right. As dramatic as that sounds, not feeling confident about how you look when you leave the house can be the start of a negative snowballing effect - the rest of the day can go downhill rapidly.

Make the decision to spend a few minutes each night, before you go to bed, deciding what to wear the next day. Have less clothing in your wardrobe and ensure they are clothes that suit you and that you actually wear.

If you are still struggling in a couple of months, sit tight, I'll be writing a blog on how to spring clean your wardrobe. Until then, good luck and remember to SMILE, that at least always makes a great first impression.
