A day of inspiration

For an increasing number of people sustainability is becoming a way of life, as Sacha Kenny discovered at this year's Edible Backyard Autumn Festival  


What a treat it was to join my mother and two sisters, don gumboots and raincoats, and head out past Levin to MyMag gardening guru Kath Irvine’s Ohau property for the annual Edible Backyard Autumn Festival, held over the weekend of April 20-21.

Kath is a bit of a legend in these parts, her knowledge of all things gardening is well known and respected, and her property, including well-organised garden and orchard, is a glowing reflection of someone who truly lives a sustainable lifestyle.

Touted as a day of inspiration and education for adults, this year’s festival gathered together local sustainability experts (listed below) to share their knowledge via mini workshops which ran throughout the weekend.

With an underlying objective of encouraging sustainability, the inspiration for this year’s festival was ‘living at baseline’.

Inspired by discussions with Steve Porteous of Bushcraft & Wild Living, Kath said the idea of 'living at baseline' comes from the realisation that many of us need to learn to live life at a more even, sustainable level. 

"Our bodies aren't built for high-adrenaline, high- stress lifestyles. Too much stress can shut down our digestion, compromise our immunity and mess with the way we think - so being able to bring ourselves back to a calmer place is an important key to living a sustainable healthy life."

Even though the rain came down, we had shelter, knowledge was shared, lessons learned and friendships made.  The music, food and coffee were great and I for one came away ready to prune my fruit trees, make cheese and save seeds.  Not to mention being full of wonder and a resolve to learn more about the amazing amount of wild food within our reach thanks to Steve Porteous's ‘wild food forging’ workshop. All in all it was a great festival - long may they continue.
