  • Dear Jenny,
I am very shy and struggle with small talk in a crowd. I have to attend functions at work and am beginning to dread them. I just do not know what to say to people I don’t know.  I feel very self-conscious standing by myself and feel others are judging me.
    Shygirl

    Dear Shygirl,
You are not alone in feeling this way. Many of the people at the functions you attend will be feeling the same. There are techniques you can learn to master “small talk”. I often find the woman with the most interesting necklace in the room and ask where she got it. People love to talk about themselves. Ask the person next to you if they have travelled far to get there or what line of work are they in. Admire someone’s shoes.

Not everyone is judging you. Despite the fact that you are quite interesting, most people are not thinking about you. We are a fickle bunch - if others' thoughts are like mine they will be thinking fleeting thoughts about others and more thoughts about themselves like: my left foot is itchy or did I put the washing on or hope I pressed record for Coro Street.

Have fun and play, practise questions and give a little information about you.

  • Dear Jenny,
What do you do with presents that you don’t like from family or friends? My family expect to see me use them or have them on display. I do not want to offend them but year after year it’s the same.
    Treading Carefully

    Dear Treading Carefully,
Stop treading carefully and be honest. How could your family and friends know you don’t like their gifts if you don’t tell them? Suggest they include an exchange card. Go shopping with them and point out things or styles you like. Be grateful and gracious. Show your friends and family respect by educating them about your tastes.

Love,
Jenny
