Hi, my name is Kath Irvine, and my business is Edible Backyard. Edible Backyard is my backyard, my permaculture-inspired home garden in the Ohau River Valley, 10 minutes south of Levin. It’s here that I get to explore my passion for growing food.

Everything that grows on my place is returned to the soil - I believe in recycling everything and buying in the bare minimum to keep my food gardens abundant and healthy. I’m always learning!
Food-growing knowledge is old knowledge, knowledge our forebears took for granted - they grew up doing it and now, if we are to be self-reliant again, we need to re-learn it.
Sometimes this feels daunting but trust me, it's a rewarding journey - a journey that begins with you wanting to grow your own vegies, but ends up taking you down many other roads. It's one that connects you to the soil, one that develops a new respect for water, one that begins to reveal the rhythm of the seasons and the earth, one that has you wondering a lot about the food you’re eating - where it came from and what it’s doing to your well being ....
So yes, it’s a journey and my workshops are here to support you along it. All you need is the passion - I'll give you the know how.
I look forward to meeting you in my Edible Backyard.
yours in the earth, Kath
