Liz Ruatoto reminds us that knowledge is power and affording ourselves the time to continue to learn and grow goes along way towards business success 

Last month we looked at simple ways to get cleared up and cleaned up ready for all the wonderful journeys 2013 is going to present for our businesses.  I’m sure after having made a start and made some progress in this area you are feeling more prepared and ready to develop some SMART goals.

Why not consider some professional development for yourself and your team.  We all know that knowledge is power and therefore if we afford ourselves the time to continue to learn new skills, increase business awareness, utilise the expertise and experience around us then we are guaranteed to succeed. 

Many SMEs (small–medium enterprises) see professional development mostly for the corporate market or larger companies who can afford to invest in their people.  But quite frankly we all benefit from learning and with more learning our businesses will continue to flourish and be successful.

There are many opportunities to get on the learning buzz without having to cost your business large sums of money, however investing in your business now will bring great rewards and success for the future.

Make a promise to your business that this will be the year to fill your kete with knowledge and trust that success will follow!


  • Use business mentors to help you focus on areas of growth for your business – business mentors will offer you guidance and solutions within your business, can open up networks, can provide you with in-house specialised training and help you achieve goals and keep you focused.
  • Seek out business networking opportunities – research the business networks available to you locally.  There are many business networking groups - it’s a matter of finding one that suits your needs.  Talk to other business owners and see what works for them, perhaps even consider creating your own networking group.  
  • Invest in specialised seminars – there are many seminars available that are worth considering for the benefit of growth and learning more about your industry, the current business environment, leadership and management, marketing and sales, financial planning, time management and much more.  It’s about understanding the areas where you can better utilise your time and energy and have maximum affect.  Again do the research and talk to others businesses.
  • Webinars are often offered at a fraction of a cost to attending conferences – there are many businesses that offer webinars, which are a relatively new tool for sharing information and providing training programmes.  Webinars have the advantage of reaching large audiences therefore making this an affordable option.
  • Courses offered locally – there are many business courses and seminars offered throughout your local region and many of them free.  Check out your local business of commerce; banks offer seminars for their customers and IRD are always keen to ensure businesses are compliant and stay in business.  Also, my business delivers small business management courses through Te Wananga o Aotearoa in the Wellington region. The fees are zero and these courses are offered right throughout Aotearoa.
